What Is a Honed Tube?
A honed tube is a precision steel tube whose inner diameter has been finish-machined with abrasive honing stones. The process removes a controlled amount of material to improve bore diameter, cylindricity, roundness and surface texture.
Unlike ordinary seamless pipe, a cylinder-grade honed tube must be purchased by its finished bore requirements. The buyer should define the ID, tolerance class, roughness or surface profile, tube construction, material grade, heat-treatment condition, straightness and inspection requirements.
A “seamless tube,” “ASTM A519 tube” or “E355 tube” is not automatically a finished hydraulic cylinder barrel. Honing or SRB finishing and the required bore acceptance criteria must be stated separately in the purchase specification.
Engineering note: A material standard and nominal wall thickness do not independently establish the allowable working pressure of a finished hydraulic cylinder. Cylinder designers must verify wall stress, fatigue, end construction, weld zones, proof pressure, buckling and the applicable equipment design code.

Honed Tube Product Range
Cold-Drawn Seamless Honed Tube
Produced from seamless mechanical or precision tubing followed by cold drawing, heat treatment where required, straightening and internal honing. It is commonly selected when buyers require a seamless barrel, controlled dimensions and flexibility for custom quantities or bore finishes.
Typical material options include E235, E355, MT1020, 1026, 1035, 1045, 4130 and 4140.
Skived and Roller-Burnished Tube — SRB Tube
SRB processing combines internal skiving with roller burnishing. Skiving establishes the required bore dimension and form, while roller burnishing plastically smooths the surface peaks.
SRB is often selected for repetitive OEM cylinder production where production efficiency and a consistent plateau-type surface are important. The required surface profile must still be matched to the seal system and application.
Welded Cold-Drawn / DOM Cylinder Tube
A welded tube is cold drawn over a mandrel to improve dimensional accuracy, concentricity and surface consistency. It can then be honed or SRB finished.
DOM cylinder tubing can provide a cost-effective option for suitable hydraulic and pneumatic applications, but weld integrity, ovality, wall variation and the governing product standard must be agreed before ordering.
Ready-to-Hone Tube
Ready-to-hone tubing is supplied with machining allowance on the inner diameter so the customer can perform final honing after cutting, welding or other fabrication.
Choose this option when:
The final bore must be finished after barrel fabrication
Your factory controls its own seal-specific surface profile
A non-standard final ID is required
Repair or reconditioning work needs additional bore allowance
Bored and Honed Heavy-Wall Tube
Hot-finished or heavy-wall seamless tube can be bored and honed when the required wall section or diameter is outside the practical cold-drawn range. Availability, concentricity, machining allowance and final tolerance must be reviewed against the drawing.

H8 vs H9 Honed Tube Bore Tolerance
H8 and H9 are ISO tolerance classes for the finished internal diameter. They are not steel grades, surface-roughness specifications or pressure ratings.
For an H-class hole, the lower deviation is zero and the permitted positive deviation changes with the nominal bore diameter.
Reference ISO Bore Tolerances
| Nominal Finished ID | H8 Bore Tolerance | H9 Bore Tolerance |
| Over 18 to 30 mm | 0 / +0.033 mm | 0 / +0.052 mm |
| Over 30 to 50 mm | 0 / +0.039 mm | 0 / +0.062 mm |
| Over 50 to 80 mm | 0 / +0.046 mm | 0 / +0.074 mm |
| Over 80 to 120 mm | 0 / +0.054 mm | 0 / +0.087 mm |
| Over 120 to 180 mm | 0 / +0.063 mm | 0 / +0.100 mm |
| Over 180 to 250 mm | 0 / +0.072 mm | 0 / +0.115 mm |
| Over 250 to 315 mm | 0 / +0.081 mm | 0 / +0.130 mm |
| Over 315 to 400 mm | 0 / +0.089 mm | 0 / +0.140 mm |
The governing ISO 286-2 edition and bore-size interval should be stated in the purchase order. For bores outside this table, request a size-specific tolerance confirmation.
When to Choose H8
Consider H8 when the cylinder design requires tighter bore control, reduced dimensional variation or closer control of the piston/seal assembly.
When to Choose H9
H9 can be sufficient when the seal and guide arrangement permits more clearance and procurement cost is more important than the tighter H8 tolerance.
The correct choice must come from the cylinder drawing and seal-system requirements. Selecting H8 does not compensate for incorrect roundness, taper, waviness or surface texture.
Honed vs SRB: Which Bore Finish Should You Specify?
| Selection Factor | Honed Bore | Skived & Roller-Burnished Bore |
| Processing principle | Abrasive material removal | Cutting followed by plastic smoothing |
| Typical surface character | Controlled cross-hatch | Smooth, plateau-type burnished surface |
| Bore geometry correction | Strong capability for correcting local bore geometry | Strong when the incoming tube and tooling are properly controlled |
| Production efficiency | Suitable for flexible quantities and finish control | Often preferred for repetitive, higher-volume production |
| Repair or oversize finishing | Well suited | Requires process-specific review |
| Surface acceptance | Ra plus cross-hatch/profile as specified | Ra plus plateau/profile parameters as specified |
| Best purchasing approach | Define finished ID, tolerance and surface profile | Define finished ID, tolerance, profile and incoming tube route |
A visually “mirror-like” bore is not automatically the best sealing surface. A bore that is too coarse can damage seals, while a surface that is too smooth may retain insufficient lubrication. When required by the seal supplier, specify additional parameters such as Rz, Rpk, Rk, Rvk, material ratio and surface lay rather than approving the bore by Ra alone.
Material and Grade Selection Guide
| Grade Family | Procurement Characteristics | Selection Caution |
| E215 / E235 | Lower-strength precision grades with useful forming and welding characteristics | Confirm delivery condition and required mechanical properties |
| MT1020 / 1020 / 1026 | Common carbon mechanical-tubing grades for machining and welded cylinder fabrication | ASTM grade does not define the finished honed bore |
| E355 / legacy ST52 requests | Frequently shortlisted for higher-load industrial cylinder barrels | ST52 and E355 must not be treated as automatically interchangeable |
| C35E / 1035 | Medium-carbon options offering greater strength and hardness potential | Weldability and heat treatment require additional attention |
| C45E / 1045 | Selected where strength, wear resistance and machining performance are important | Preheat or controlled welding procedures may be necessary |
| 25CrMo4 / 4130 | Chromium-molybdenum family for fatigue-sensitive or higher-strength applications | Confirm material standard, heat treatment and weld procedure |
| 42CrMo4 / 4140 | Higher-strength alloy family for demanding mechanical loads | Properties vary substantially with quenching, tempering and section size |

Why Source Honed Tubes from Dongmeng Group?
Multi-Standard Product Selection
We support procurement across ASTM, EN, DIN legacy and JIS purchasing requirements, helping buyers compare grade, condition and processing options before ordering.
Base Tube and Bore Finish Matched Together
The quotation separates tube construction, material grade and delivery condition from the final honing or SRB requirements. This reduces the risk of receiving the correct steel grade with the wrong bore condition.
Drawing-Based Custom Processing
Cut lengths, tolerances, machining allowance, end preparation and additional fabrication can be reviewed against your drawing.
Inspection Defined Before Production
Required MTCs, dimensional reports, roughness verification, NDT and independent inspection can be incorporated into the order rather than requested after production.
Export-Oriented Packing
Finished bores can be cleaned, protected and capped before export packing to reduce corrosion and handling damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between a honed tube and an ordinary seamless tube?
A seamless tube describes the tube’s construction. A honed tube describes the finished internal bore. A seamless tube is not cylinder-ready unless the required ID, tolerance, roughness and geometry have also been completed and inspected.
2. Are H8 and H9 surface-finish grades?
No. H8 and H9 are dimensional tolerance classes. They do not define roughness, roundness, material grade or pressure capacity. The bore surface requirement must be stated separately.
3. Should I choose an H8 or H9 bore?
Choose according to the drawing, piston guidance and seal requirements. H8 provides tighter dimensional control, while H9 may reduce processing cost when the design permits a wider bore tolerance.
4. Is honed tube better than SRB tube?
Neither process is universally better. Honing offers flexible geometry correction and a controlled cross-hatched surface. SRB is attractive for efficient OEM production and a smooth plateau-type finish. The seal system and required surface profile should determine the selection.
5. Can E355 replace ST52?
Do not approve the substitution by name alone. ST52 is commonly used in legacy specifications, while E355 appears in current EN precision-tube purchasing. The chemistry, mechanical properties, delivery condition, dimensions and inspection requirements must be compared.
6. Is ASTM A519 a hydraulic pressure-pipe standard?
ASTM A519 is a mechanical-tubing specification. It can provide suitable base material for hydraulic cylinder barrels, but it does not independently define a finished honed bore or establish the safe working pressure of a completed cylinder.
7. Can you supply 4130 or 4140 honed cylinder tubes?
These grades can be reviewed for higher-strength cylinder applications. Please provide the required material standard, heat-treatment condition, mechanical properties, dimensions, welding requirements and inspection plan.
8. What bore roughness should I specify?
The correct value depends on the seal material, lubrication, speed, pressure and surface-profile requirement. Ra 0.2–0.8 μm is a common quotation range across different honed and SRB products, but the drawing or seal supplier’s specification should govern.
9. Can you supply custom IDs and cut lengths?
Custom dimensions and cut lengths can be reviewed. Include the finished ID, OD or wall thickness, length tolerance, bore tolerance, machining allowance and order quantity.
10. Which inspections can be provided?
Depending on the governing standard and purchase order, inspection can include MTC review, dimensional measurement, roughness testing, hardness testing, UT/ET and independent third-party inspection.
11. What information affects honed tube pricing?
Price is mainly affected by grade, seamless or welded construction, finished ID and OD, wall thickness, tolerance class, surface profile, length, order quantity, machining, testing, documentation and packing.
12. What are the MOQ and production time?
MOQ and production time depend on whether the requested size is available from existing base-tube production, the selected grade, tooling, honing or SRB process, testing and quantity. They should be confirmed after technical review rather than stated as one universal value.
13. How should honed tubes be packed for sea shipment?
The bore should be cleaned, protected against corrosion, capped and isolated from contamination. Waterproof or VCI wrapping, strapped bundles, cases and container bracing can be selected according to the destination and storage period.
14. What should I include in an RFQ?
Send the standard and edition, grade, delivery condition, seamless or welded construction, bore process, ID, OD or wall, tolerance, roughness/profile, length, quantity, end processing, inspection documents, packing and destination.
