Aluminum Alloy Series Guide

The alloy number should be selected according to the required balance between strength, corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, conductivity and machinability.

Series Main Alloying System Typical Grades Main Characteristics Typical Applications
1xxx Commercially Pure Al 1050, 1060, 1070, 1100 Excellent corrosion resistance, conductivity and formability; relatively low strength Electrical, chemical, heat transfer, packaging
2xxx Al-Cu 2014, 2024, 2219 High strength, good machinability, generally lower corrosion resistance Machined parts, transportation, high-strength components
3xxx Al-Mn 3003, 3004, 3005, 3104, 3105 Good formability, corrosion resistance and moderate strength HVAC, roofing, cookware, packaging
4xxx Al-Si 4032, 4045 Lower melting range, good wear/brazing characteristics depending on grade Brazing sheet, welding material, automotive components
5xxx Al-Mg 5005, 5052, 5083, 5086, 5182, 5454, 5754 Excellent corrosion resistance and weldability; medium to high strength Marine, transportation, tanks, structures
6xxx Al-Mg-Si 6005A, 6060, 6061, 6063, 6082 Heat treatable, good extrusion performance and balanced mechanical properties Profiles, machinery, structures, automotive
7xxx Al-Zn-Mg(-Cu) 7005, 7020, 7050, 7075 Very high strength; alloy-dependent weldability and corrosion performance High-strength components, machining, transportation
8xxx Other Systems 8011, 8021, 8079 Widely used in thin-gauge foil and specialized applications Foil, packaging, converting

How to Select the Right Aluminum Alloy

Choose 1xxx When Conductivity and Formability Matter

1050, 1060 and 1070 are suitable when high electrical or thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance and forming performance are more important than structural strength.

Typical uses include busbars, reflectors, heat-transfer components and chemical equipment.

Choose 3003 or 3004 for General Forming

3xxx alloys provide a practical balance between corrosion resistance, cost, strength and formability.

They are commonly selected for HVAC, roofing, insulation, containers and general sheet-metal fabrication.

Choose 5052 for Formed and Welded Components

5052 offers significantly higher strength than commercially pure aluminum while maintaining good corrosion resistance and formability.

It is commonly used in sheet-metal fabrication, cabinets, enclosures, transportation and marine-related components.

Choose 5083 or 5086 for Marine Applications

5083 and 5086 are frequently selected where seawater corrosion resistance and weldability are important.

For marine plate requiring 5xxx-H116 or H321 conditions, the applicable marine specification should also be confirmed rather than purchasing only by alloy number.

Choose 6061 for General Structural and Machined Parts

6061 is one of the most widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloys because it provides a balanced combination of strength, machining performance, corrosion resistance and availability.

Choose 6063 for Extrusion and Architectural Profiles

6063 provides good extrusion characteristics and surface quality, making it suitable for architectural profiles, frames, rails and decorative extrusion components.

Choose 6082 for Higher-Strength Structural Applications

6082 is widely used for structural and engineering applications, particularly in markets where EN material specifications are commonly used.

Choose 7075 When Maximum Strength Is Required

7075 offers very high strength and is suitable for high-load machined components.

However, buyers should not select 7075 only because it is stronger. Its weldability and corrosion behavior differ substantially from 5xxx and 6xxx alloys.

Where welding, seawater exposure or extensive forming is required, another alloy may be more appropriate.

Understanding Aluminum Tempers

Correct temper selection is as important as selecting the alloy.

O Temper

Fully annealed condition offering maximum softness and formability.

Common in deep drawing, foil and forming applications.

H Temper

Strain-hardened condition mainly used for non-heat-treatable alloys.

Examples include:

H14 / H18 / H24 / H32 / H34 / H111 / H116 / H321

The exact designation indicates the combination of strain hardening, annealing or stabilization.

T Temper

Thermally treated condition used with heat-treatable alloys.

Common examples include:

T4 / T5 / T6 / T651 / T6511 / T7351 / T7451

T651 and similar stress-relieved conditions are frequently preferred for plate used in machining because dimensional stability can be important after material removal.

Important: Not every temper is available or technically valid for every aluminum alloy and product form.

Aluminum Standards

We can supply aluminum materials against commonly specified ASTM, EN and other international standards according to product form and project requirements.

Standard Typical Product Scope
ASTM B209 / B209M Aluminum and aluminum-alloy sheet and plate
ASTM B928 / B928M Selected high-magnesium 5xxx aluminum sheet and plate for marine service
ASTM B632 / B632M Aluminum-alloy rolled tread plate
ASTM B221 Extruded bars, rods, wire, profiles and tubes
ASTM B210 / B210M Drawn seamless aluminum and aluminum-alloy tube
ASTM B241 / B241M Aluminum-alloy seamless pipe and seamless extruded tube
EN 573 Aluminum alloy designation and chemical composition
EN 485 Aluminum sheet, strip and plate
EN 755 Extruded rod, bar, tube and profiles
EN 546 Aluminum foil
GB/T 3190 Chemical composition of wrought aluminum alloys
GB/T 3880 Aluminum and aluminum-alloy plate, sheet and strip

The correct standard should always be confirmed together with alloy, temper, dimensional tolerance and intended service condition.

A standard number alone does not completely define an aluminum purchase specification.

2. What is the difference between aluminum sheet and aluminum plate?

Both are flat-rolled aluminum products. The distinction is normally based on thickness and the applicable specification. Instead of relying only on the product name, industrial buyers should specify the exact thickness, alloy, temper and standard.

3. What is the difference between 5052 and 6061 aluminum?

5052 is a non-heat-treatable Al-Mg alloy with very good corrosion resistance, weldability and forming capability. 6061 is a heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy that can achieve higher strength and is widely used for structural components and machining.

For extensively formed sheet components, 5052 may be preferable. For machined or structural parts, 6061-T6 or T651 is often considered.

4. Is 5083 aluminum suitable for marine applications?

Yes. 5083 is widely used for marine structures because of its combination of strength, weldability and resistance to seawater corrosion.

However, marine projects should also specify the required temper and applicable standard. For certain marine service applications, H116 or H321 material with appropriate corrosion-performance requirements may be required.

5. Which aluminum alloy is best for CNC machining?

6061 is widely selected for general CNC machining because it provides a good balance of machinability, strength, corrosion resistance and availability.

7075 may be selected when much higher strength is required, while other alloys may be more appropriate depending on the final operating environment.

6. Can you supply custom aluminum dimensions?

Yes. Cutting, slitting, leveling, sawing and customized extrusion services can be provided depending on product type, dimensions, quantity and tolerance requirements.

The most important information is:

product + alloy + temper + dimensions + quantity + standard + surface + processing + application + destination.

A drawing is recommended for customized profiles or machined components.

11. Do you supply both aluminum and aluminium products?

Yes. “Aluminum” and “aluminium” refer to the same material. “Aluminum” is commonly used in the United States, while “aluminium” is common in the UK, Europe and many other international markets.

12. Can you help us choose the correct aluminum grade?

Yes. If you provide the application, operating environment, required strength, welding process, fabrication method and applicable standard, our team can help compare suitable alloy and temper options.

Final material selection should always be confirmed against the engineering and regulatory requirements of the application.

13. Can different aluminum products be consolidated into one shipment?

Yes, subject to order quantity, product compatibility and shipping conditions. Sheet, plate, coil, bar, tube and other metal products can be coordinated for consolidated procurement when practical.

14. What should I specify for an aluminum foil order?

In addition to alloy and temper, foil buyers should normally specify thickness, width, roll OD, core ID, surface condition, winding direction, coating or printing requirement and downstream converting application.

15. Do you offer surface-treated aluminum?

Yes. Depending on product type, available options may include anodizing, brushing, polishing, PE/PVDF coating, embossing, protective film and customized surface treatment.
