Complete Carbon Steel Pipe Product Range

A professional carbon steel pipe sourcing program should not be limited to only “seamless” and “welded.” Different manufacturing processes exist because different engineering applications impose different requirements on pressure, diameter, wall thickness, cost and inspection.

1. Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe

Seamless carbon steel pipe is produced from solid billets without a longitudinal welded seam.

Common production routes include:

Hot rolled seamless pipe

Hot expanded seamless pipe

Cold drawn seamless tube

Cold rolled precision tube

Heat-treated seamless pipe

Common Standards

ASTM A106
ASTM A53 Type S
ASTM A333

GB/T 8163

Typical Applications

High-temperature piping

Steam systems

Refineries

Petrochemical plants

Power plants

Pressure piping

Oil and gas service

Mechanical components

Hydraulic machinery

Process pipelines

Seamless pipe is normally selected when the design specification specifically requires seamless manufacture or when pressure, temperature and service severity make it the preferred solution.

2. ERW / HFW Carbon Steel Pipe

ERW — Electric Resistance Welded Pipe is manufactured from steel strip or coil that is continuously formed into a cylindrical shape and longitudinally welded.

Modern high-frequency welding processes provide high production efficiency and good dimensional consistency.

Typical Standards

API 5L
ASTM A500
EN 10217
EN 10219
GB/T 3091

Typical Applications

Water pipelines

Fire protection systems

General industrial piping

Low and medium pressure service

Structural steel

Machinery

Construction

Agricultural systems

Fence and support structures

Pipeline transportation

ERW pipe usually provides an economical solution for high-volume projects where welded construction is permitted by the governing specification.

3. LSAW Carbon Steel Pipe

LSAW — Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded Pipe is commonly used for large-diameter, heavier-wall pipeline and structural applications.

Depending on mill technology, plate can be formed using JCOE, UOE or other forming processes before longitudinal submerged arc welding.

Typical Applications

Oil transmission pipelines

Natural gas pipelines

Large water transmission systems

Petrochemical projects

Offshore infrastructure

Power projects

Large structural columns

Piling

Heavy industrial projects

Typical Advantages

Large outside diameter

Heavy wall thickness capability

Good dimensional control

Suitable for demanding pipeline applications

Efficient production of project-specific sizes

For line pipe projects, the required API specification level, grade, dimensions and supplementary requirements should be clearly stated in the RFQ.

4. SSAW / Spiral Welded Carbon Steel Pipe

SSAW — Spiral Submerged Arc Welded Pipe is manufactured by forming steel coil into a spiral and welding the spiral seam using submerged arc welding.

It is particularly practical for large-diameter pipe.

Common Standards

API 5L
ASTM A252
EN 10217
Project-specific water pipeline standards

Common Applications

Water transmission

Drainage systems

Piling

Foundation piles

Port projects

Bridge foundations

Structural columns

Oil and gas pipelines

Infrastructure projects

SSAW is frequently selected for large-diameter projects where cost efficiency and flexible diameter production are important.

5. Carbon Steel Structural Pipe & Hollow Sections

Carbon steel tubing is also widely used as a load-bearing structural material rather than for fluid transportation.

Available forms include:

Circular Hollow Section — CHS

Round structural tube for:

Steel structures

Columns

Trusses

Towers

Machinery frames

Agricultural structures

Solar mounting systems

Square Hollow Section — SHS

Used for:

Building frames

Rectangular Hollow Section — RHS

Common in:

Structural frames

Mechanical fabrication

Trailer construction

Warehouses

Machinery

Architectural steelwork

Typical structural standards include ASTM A500, EN 10210 and EN 10219.

Structural hollow sections should not automatically be substituted for pressure piping materials. The required product standard must follow the design purpose.

Carbon Steel Pipe by Service Requirement

High-Temperature Carbon Steel Pipe

High-temperature systems require material specifications intended for elevated-temperature service.

A common example is:

ASTM A106

Available in:

Grade A

Grade B

Grade C

ASTM A106 is frequently specified for:

Refineries

Power stations

Steam lines

Petrochemical plants

Process piping

High-temperature industrial systems

ASTM A106 is a seamless pipe specification.

Do not specify welded ASTM A106 pipe.

Low-Temperature Carbon Steel Pipe

For low-temperature pressure service, impact toughness becomes an important material-selection factor.

ASTM A333

Common grades include:

Grade 1

Grade 3

Grade 6

Other grades according to project requirements

ASTM A333 Grade 6 is one of the most frequently requested grades for low-temperature carbon steel piping.

Typical applications include:

Low-temperature process piping

LNG-related facilities

Gas processing facilities

Cold-region projects

Chemical plants

Required impact testing temperature must be checked against the project specification.

Oil & Gas Line Pipe

API 5L Carbon Steel Line Pipe

API 5L is a major specification for steel line pipe used in pipeline transportation systems.

Available manufacturing routes may include:

Seamless

HFW/ERW

LSAW

SSAW

Common grades include:

Grade B

X42

X46

X52

X56

X60

X65

X70

Higher grades may be available according to the project and production route.

PSL1 vs PSL2

API 5L orders should clearly identify whether the requirement is:

PSL1 or PSL2.

PSL2 generally introduces tighter and more extensive requirements in areas such as chemistry, mechanical properties, traceability and testing.

For critical pipeline projects, do not send an RFQ stating only:

“API 5L X52 Pipe.”

A complete inquiry should define:

API 5L + grade + PSL + OD + WT + manufacturing route + length + end condition + coating + inspection + project supplementary requirements.

ASTM A53 Carbon Steel Pipe

ASTM A53 is one of the most widely specified general-purpose carbon steel pipe standards.

Depending on type and ordered requirements, it can cover:

Seamless pipe

Welded pipe

Black steel pipe

Hot-dip galvanized pipe

Common grades include:

Grade A

Grade B

Typical applications include:

Mechanical systems

General pressure service

Water lines

Air systems

Structural projects

General industrial piping

ASTM A53 should not automatically be treated as an equivalent replacement for ASTM A106 simply because both may be available in Grade B.

The applicable service requirement must be checked first.

Carbon Steel Pipe for Piling

ASTM A252 Steel Pipe Pile

ASTM A252 pipe is widely specified for steel pipe piling.

Common grades include:

Grade 1

Grade 2

Grade 3

Applications include:

Building foundations

Bridges

Ports

Marine structures

Offshore foundations

Retaining structures

Industrial foundations

Large-diameter LSAW and SSAW pipes are commonly used for piling projects.

Optional fabrication can include:

Cutting

Welding

End plates

Driving shoes

Splicing preparation

External coating

Project marking

Large-Diameter EFW Carbon Steel Pipe

Large welded pressure pipes may also be specified according to standards such as:

ASTM A671

Electric-fusion-welded steel pipe for specific pressure and temperature applications.

ASTM A672

Electric-fusion-welded steel pipe commonly used for high-pressure service at moderate temperatures.

These products should be purchased according to the complete standard designation, material grade/class and project requirements rather than simply as “large diameter carbon steel pipe.”

Mechanical Carbon Steel Tubing

ASTM A519 Mechanical Tubing

ASTM A519 seamless mechanical tubing is widely used for:

Machinery

Hydraulic components

Rollers

Bushings

Sleeves

Automotive parts

Precision-machined parts

Engineering equipment

Common requirements may include:

Controlled OD

Controlled ID

Tight wall thickness

Straightness

Machining allowance

Heat treatment

Surface roughness

Mechanical tubing selection should be separated from pressure piping selection because the dimensional and performance priorities are different.

Carbon Steel Pipe Standards & Selection Guide

Standard Product Type Typical Service
ASTM A53 Seamless / Welded General piping, mechanical and structural service
ASTM A106 Seamless High-temperature pressure piping
ASTM A333 Seamless / Welded depending on grade/specification Low-temperature service

EN 10219 Cold-Formed HSS Structural applications

The correct specification should always be selected from the design service, not simply from price or availability.

Seamless vs ERW vs LSAW vs SSAW

Requirement Seamless ERW/HFW LSAW SSAW
Small/Medium Diameter Excellent Excellent Limited Limited
Large Diameter Available Moderate Excellent Excellent
Heavy Wall Excellent Moderate Excellent Good
High-Temperature Process Piping Excellent Specification dependent Specification dependent Limited
Oil & Gas Line Pipe Excellent Excellent Excellent Excellent when permitted
Water Transmission Good Excellent Excellent Excellent
Structural Use Good Excellent Excellent Excellent
Pipe Piling Good Good Excellent Excellent
High Production Efficiency Moderate Excellent Moderate Excellent
Cost Efficiency Moderate Excellent Good Excellent

There is no single manufacturing process that is “best” for every project.

Selection should be based on:

standard + service + pressure + temperature + OD + wall thickness + inspection requirement + project economics.

Carbon Steel Pipe Sizes

Carbon steel pipe is commonly specified using:

NPS — Nominal Pipe Size

together with:

Schedule — Wall Thickness Series

Typical schedules include:

SCH 5
SCH 10
SCH 20
SCH 30
SCH 40
SCH 60
SCH 80
SCH 100
SCH 120
SCH 140
SCH 160
STD
XS
XXS

Metric OD × wall thickness specifications are also available.

Important Purchasing Note

Schedule does not represent one fixed wall thickness across all pipe diameters.

For example, SCH 40 pipe of different NPS sizes has different actual wall thickness.

Therefore, professional RFQs should ideally provide:

NPS + Schedule

or

Actual OD × WT

to avoid quotation errors.

Common Carbon Steel Grades

ASTM Grades

A53 Grade A
A53 Grade B
A106 Grade A

Traceability Matters

For EPC, oil and gas, pressure piping and industrial projects, buyers should pay close attention to heat-number traceability.

Pipe marking and documentation should allow the material to be traced back to the applicable heat and inspection certificate.

When pipes are cut into shorter lengths, traceability requirements should be defined before processing.

This is particularly important for:

Pressure piping

API line pipe

Petrochemical projects

Power plants

Low-temperature materials

Third-party inspected orders

Applications of Carbon Steel Pipe

Oil & Gas

Used for:

Gathering lines

Transmission pipelines

Process piping

Gas transportation

Terminal facilities

Common requirements may involve API 5L or ASTM pressure-pipe specifications.

Petrochemical & Chemical Plants

Used for:

Process lines

Utility piping

Steam systems

Water systems

Hydrocarbon service

Material selection depends heavily on temperature, pressure and corrosion conditions.

Power Generation

Typical uses include:

Steam piping

Water lines

Utility systems

Plant process piping

ASTM A106 is frequently associated with elevated-temperature carbon steel piping applications.

Water Transmission

Large-volume water projects may use:

ERW pipe

LSAW pipe

SSAW pipe

with suitable internal and external corrosion-protection systems.

Construction & Steel Structures

Used for:

Columns

Trusses

Frames

Supports

Piling & Foundation Engineering

Large-diameter pipe piles are used in:

Ports

Bridges

Marine structures

High-rise buildings

Industrial foundations

ASTM A252 is one of the key specifications used for pipe pile applications.

Machinery Manufacturing

Carbon steel tubing is used for:

Rollers

Axles

Sleeves

Frames

Hydraulic components

Machined parts

Mechanical structures

Dimensional accuracy and machining allowance often matter more than conventional piping schedules.

How to Select the Correct Carbon Steel Pipe

Before requesting a quotation, determine these seven conditions.

1. What Is the Application?

Pressure piping?

Pipeline?

Structural?

Piling?

Mechanical?

Water transmission?

The application determines which standard family should be considered.

2. What Fluid Will the Pipe Carry?

Water, oil, natural gas, steam, compressed air or process fluid?

Fluid properties can influence material and coating selection.

3. What Is the Design Temperature?

High-temperature and low-temperature service may require different material specifications.

4. What Is the Design Pressure?

Pressure affects required wall thickness, material grade and applicable design code.

5. Seamless or Welded?

Do not automatically specify seamless pipe if the engineering standard permits an economical welded solution.

Likewise, do not substitute welded pipe when the specification explicitly requires seamless manufacture.

6. What Corrosion Protection Is Required?

Determine whether you need:

Bare pipe

Painting

Galvanizing

FBE

3LPE

3LPP

Internal epoxy

7. What Inspection Level Is Required?

Define MTC, NDT, hydrostatic testing, third-party inspection and project-specific documentation before ordering.

Common Procurement Mistakes

Mistake 1: Buying by “Grade B” Only

A106 Gr.B, A53 Gr.B and API 5L Gr.B are not simply interchangeable names.

Always provide the full product specification.

Mistake 2: Giving Only Pipe Diameter

“4-inch carbon steel pipe” is not enough.

Provide:

NPS 4 + SCH 40

or

OD 114.3 mm × WT 6.02 mm

plus the standard and grade.

Mistake 3: Ignoring PSL Requirement

For API 5L projects, indicate PSL1 or PSL2.

Mistake 4: Ordering Coating Without Defining the Specification

“3PE coated pipe” alone may be insufficient.

Provide the coating standard and project requirements.

Mistake 5: Treating Structural Pipe as Pressure Pipe

Structural hollow sections and pressure pipes are governed by different product requirements.

Mistake 6: Requesting a Material Equivalent Without Engineering Review

Materials from ASTM, EN, JIS and GB systems can have similar mechanical properties but different chemistry, testing and delivery requirements.

Equivalency should be technically reviewed before substitution.

Frequently Asked Questions About Carbon Steel Pipe

1. What is carbon steel pipe?

Carbon steel pipe is steel pipe in which carbon is one of the principal alloying elements. It is widely used for pressure piping, oil and gas transmission, water pipelines, structural fabrication, piling and mechanical applications because of its strength, weldability, availability and cost efficiency.

2. What is the difference between seamless and welded carbon steel pipe?

Seamless pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal welded seam, while welded pipe is produced from steel plate or coil and contains a welded joint.

Whether seamless or welded pipe should be used depends on the applicable standard, pressure, temperature, diameter, wall thickness and project specification.

Seamless is not automatically necessary for every industrial application.

3. What is the difference between ASTM A53 and ASTM A106?

ASTM A53 is a broader general pipe specification covering applicable seamless and welded products and can include black or hot-dip galvanized pipe.

ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe intended for high-temperature service.

Therefore, ASTM A106 should not be described as a welded pipe standard.

4. What is the difference between ASTM A106 Grade B and API 5L Grade B?

Both are common carbon steel pipe grades, but they belong to different standards designed around different service requirements.

ASTM A106 is primarily a seamless high-temperature pressure-piping specification.

API 5L is designed for line pipe used in pipeline transportation systems.

Material substitution should be approved against the engineering specification.

5. What does SCH 40 carbon steel pipe mean?

SCH 40 is a pipe wall-thickness designation.

It does not mean that every SCH 40 pipe has the same wall thickness. Actual wall thickness changes with nominal pipe size.

A complete specification should therefore include both NPS and schedule.

6. Can you supply API 5L PSL2 pipe?

API 5L pipe can be supplied according to project requirements, including specified grades and PSL requirements subject to size, manufacturing route and mill availability.

Your RFQ should clearly state PSL1 or PSL2.

7. Which carbon steel pipe is suitable for high-temperature service?

ASTM A106 seamless carbon steel pipe is one of the most commonly specified products for elevated-temperature industrial piping.

Actual material selection must still consider design temperature, pressure, corrosion allowance and applicable piping code.

8. Which carbon steel pipe is suitable for low-temperature service?

ASTM A333, including commonly specified Grade 6, is widely used for low-temperature piping.

Impact-test requirements and minimum design temperature should be checked against the project specification.

9. Can you supply large-diameter carbon steel pipe?

Yes. Large-diameter carbon steel pipe can be supplied using manufacturing routes such as LSAW and SSAW depending on diameter, wall thickness, standard and project requirements.

10. What coatings are available for carbon steel pipe?

Available options can include:

Black painting

Anti-rust oil

Hot-dip galvanizing

FBE

3LPE / 3PE

3LPP

Internal epoxy coating

Coating systems should be specified according to the service environment and project standard.

11. Can you cut carbon steel pipe to custom lengths?

Yes. Fixed-length cutting can be arranged together with beveling, threading, grooving and other end preparation according to the order specification.

12. Do you provide EN 10204 3.1 MTC?

EN 10204 3.1 material certification can be supplied for applicable orders together with heat-number traceability and related inspection documents.

13. Can third-party inspection be arranged?

Yes. Customer-appointed inspection agencies such as SGS, BV or TÜV can be arranged when required by the purchase order.

The inspection scope should be defined before production.

14. Can you provide hydrostatic and NDT testing?

Hydrostatic testing and nondestructive testing such as UT, ET or RT can be provided when required by the applicable product standard or project specification.

The appropriate NDT method depends on pipe manufacturing process and specification.

15. Do you supply both metric and imperial pipe sizes?

Yes. Carbon steel pipe can be supplied using metric dimensions or NPS/Schedule systems depending on the applicable standard and project requirements.

16. Can ASTM, EN and GB materials be substituted for one another?

Possible equivalents can be evaluated, but they should not be treated as automatically interchangeable.

Chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment, impact properties, dimensional requirements and inspection requirements must be compared before substitution.

17. What information is required to quote carbon steel pipe?

At minimum, provide:

standard + grade + manufacturing method + OD/NPS + wall thickness/schedule + length + quantity.

For project orders, also provide coating, pipe ends, inspection requirements and delivery destination.

18. Can you quote from an MTO or BOQ?

Yes. For EPC, pipeline, construction and industrial projects, send the complete MTO, BOQ or pipe schedule.

This allows multiple sizes, grades, coatings and processing requirements to be reviewed as one project package.

Need Carbon Steel Pipe for Your Next Project?
