Heavy Plate Thickness Range

Dongmeng Group recommends positioning this page around 6–100 mm 316L plate.

Thickness Range Typical Purchasing Requirement
6–12 mm Tanks, covers, welded housings and general industrial fabrication
15–25 mm Flanges, supports, pressure components and structural parts
30–50 mm Heavy machinery, machined components, tube sheets and thick flanges
60–100 mm Large machined parts, heavy pressure components and project-specific blanks

Availability varies by width, length, mill source, required standard and certification. Non-standard thicknesses should be confirmed before the buyer finalizes drawings.

Chemical Composition of 316L

The following values are representative maximum or range requirements commonly associated with flat-rolled Type 316L material. Final compliance must be based on the applicable purchase specification and the supplied mill certificate.

Element 316L Requirement
Carbon, C ≤0.030%
Manganese, Mn ≤2.00%
Silicon, Si ≤0.75%
Phosphorus, P ≤0.045%
Sulfur, S ≤0.030%
Chromium, Cr 16.0–18.0%
Nickel, Ni 10.0–14.0%
Molybdenum, Mo 2.00–3.00%
Nitrogen, N ≤0.10%

The molybdenum addition gives 316L improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in many chloride-containing environments compared with 304/304L. It does not make the material immune to seawater, concentrated chlorides or every chemical environment.

Mechanical Properties

Typical minimum room-temperature requirements for annealed 316L flat products include:

Property Typical Minimum Requirement
Tensile strength 485 MPa
0.2% yield strength 170 MPa
Elongation 40%
Hardness 95 HRB maximum

Mechanical requirements can vary with the governing specification, product form and thickness. The mill test certificate should be used as the acceptance document for each supplied heat and plate.

Why Choose 316L for Heavy Plate Applications?

Improved Resistance in Chloride-Containing Environments

316L contains molybdenum, which generally improves pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance compared with 304L. It is widely considered for chemical-processing, food, pharmaceutical, pulp-and-paper and marine-related equipment where 304L may provide insufficient corrosion resistance.

Lower Carbon for Welded Fabrication

The maximum carbon content of 316L is lower than that of standard 316. This helps reduce the risk of chromium-carbide precipitation in heat-affected areas during welding, particularly where post-weld solution annealing is impractical.

The phrase "low carbon completely prevents corrosion after welding" should not be used. Weld design, filler metal, heat input, contamination control and post-weld cleaning remain important.

Suitable for Thick Welded Components

Heavy 316L plate is commonly selected for fabricated tanks, pressure-equipment components, supports, flanges and machined parts where both section thickness and corrosion resistance are required.

Good Fabrication Capability

316L can be welded, bent and machined, but it work-hardens during deformation and machining. Heavy plate processing therefore requires rigid equipment, suitable tooling, controlled feeds and adequate cooling.

316L Heavy Plate vs. 316L Sheet

Comparison 316L Heavy Plate 316L Sheet
Page positioning Industrial thick plate Thin sheet and decorative fabrication
Typical thickness focus 6–100 mm Generally below 6 mm
Typical production form Discrete hot-rolled plate Cold-rolled sheet or cut-to-length coil
Main surface No.1 hot rolled 2B, BA, No.4 or decorative finishes
Typical processing Heavy cutting, drilling, beveling and machining Laser cutting, bending, stamping and polishing
Typical applications Pressure equipment, tanks, flanges and heavy components Covers, panels, enclosures and decorative products
Buyer priorities Thickness tolerance, flatness, UT, MTC and cutting accuracy Surface quality, protective film and bendability

This distinction should be maintained throughout the page. Avoid placing decorative BA, mirror and PVD finishes in the primary specification table for heavy plate.

316L vs. 304L Heavy Plate

Property 316L Heavy Plate 304L Heavy Plate
Molybdenum Approximately 2–3% Normally no deliberate Mo addition
Chloride resistance Generally better Lower than 316L
Material cost Usually higher Usually more economical
General fabrication Good Good
Typical selection Chemical, coastal, marine-related and wash-down environments General tanks, structures and less aggressive environments
Important limitation Not immune to seawater or strong chloride attack May pit earlier in chloride exposure

316L should be selected from actual operating conditions rather than from the general term "marine grade." Chloride concentration, temperature, crevices, cleaning method and exposure duration all affect performance.

Available Plate Processing Services

Cut-to-Size Plate

Rectangular blanks can be supplied according to the required length and width, helping customers reduce material preparation work.

Drawing-Based Profile Cutting

Circular blanks, rings, flanges, equipment bases and irregular profiles can be evaluated from DXF, DWG, STEP or PDF drawings.

Plasma Cutting

Plasma cutting can be considered for thick industrial plate where productivity is more important than a fully machined cut edge.

Waterjet Cutting

Waterjet cutting can be considered where lower thermal influence and detailed profiles are required.

Laser Cutting

Laser cutting may be used within the available machine thickness and size range. It should not be presented as the default method for every 100 mm plate.

Drilling and CNC Machining

Bolt holes, machined faces, counterbores, grooves and other features can be evaluated according to the drawing, tolerance and quantity.

Edge Beveling

Weld-preparation bevels can be supplied when the required angle, root face, groove type and tolerance are specified.

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness is considered 316L heavy plate?

There is no single universal commercial definition. For this page, Dongmeng Group recommends using 6 mm and above as the main thick-plate range, with a focus on 6–100 mm.

Is 316L plate supplied under ASTM A240?

ASTM A240/A240M covers chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure-vessel and general applications. The purchase order should specify the required revision, grade, units and supplementary requirements.

What surface is standard for thick 316L plate?

Hot-rolled heavy plate is normally promoted with a No.1 or equivalent hot-rolled, annealed and pickled surface rather than decorative BA or mirror finishes. Outokumpu lists No.1 as an ASTM quarto-plate finish for 316L product variants.

Can you supply 316L plate cut to drawing?

Rectangular blanks, rings and custom profiles can be quoted after reviewing the material thickness, dimensions, tolerances and drawing.

Can you provide ultrasonic testing?

UT can be arranged when the testing standard, probe coverage and acceptance class are specified before quotation.

Is 316L always suitable for seawater?

No. 316L offers better chloride resistance than 304L, but it can still suffer pitting and crevice corrosion in warm, stagnant or concentrated chloride environments.

Can 316L heavy plate be welded?

Yes. Conventional welding processes can be used with suitable procedures and filler metals. Thick-section welding requires control of joint design, heat input, distortion and post-weld surface cleaning.

Can 316L be hardened by heat treatment?

316L is not hardened through conventional heat treatment. Strength and hardness can increase through cold working.
