Choose 316L stainless steel sheet when the project involves welding, chloride exposure, coastal atmosphere, chemical processing, food-grade equipment or pharmaceutical systems. Choose 304 only when the environment is mild and cost control is the main priority. For heavy welded sections, 316L is often preferred because its low carbon content helps reduce sensitization risk.
Corrosion Resistance Analysis
316L stainless steel sheet offers stronger corrosion resistance than 304 stainless steel sheet in chloride-containing environments because of its molybdenum content. It performs well in atmospheric, food processing, pharmaceutical, marine and many chemical service environments.
However, 316L should not be treated as universally corrosion-proof. In warm seawater, stagnant chloride solutions or crevice conditions, pitting and crevice corrosion may still occur. For severe seawater or high-chloride conditions, duplex 2205, super duplex 2507 or higher alloy stainless steels may be more suitable. AZoM notes that 316L is generally more resistant than 304 but may still be subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments.
