The Manufacturing Process

 

Preparation of Steel Coil:

Acid Pickling:

After cleaning, the steel coil is immersed in an acid bath, usually hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. This pickling process further removes any remaining contaminants and creates a chemically reactive surface on the steel, which is essential for the zinc to bond effectively.

 

Fluxing:

Next, the pickled steel coil is dipped into a flux solution. The flux serves two important purposes. It protects the steel surface from oxidation before it enters the molten zinc bath and also helps in the formation of a smooth and even zinc coating.

 

Galvanizing Bath:

The heart of the process is the immersion of the prepared steel coil into a molten zinc bath, which is maintained at a temperature typically between 435 °C and 455 °C (815 °F - 850 °F). As the steel coil is submerged, a metallurgical reaction occurs, leading to the formation of a series of zinc - iron alloy layers on the surface. The thickness of the zinc coating can be precisely controlled by adjusting the immersion time and the withdrawal speed of the coil from the bath.

 

Cooling:

Once the steel coil is withdrawn from the zinc bath, it is allowed to cool. This can be done either by air - cooling or water quenching, depending on the desired properties of the final product. Cooling solidifies the zinc coating and ensures its uniformity.

 

Finishing:

After cooling, the galvanized steel coil may undergo additional finishing processes such as leveling, tension leveling, or slitting. These processes help in achieving the desired thickness and dimensions for the specific applications.
