What Is AISI 316 Stainless Steel Sheet?
AISI 316 stainless steel sheet is a flat-rolled chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel product. It belongs to the austenitic stainless steel family and provides a practical combination of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, surface quality and low-temperature toughness.
The molybdenum content is the principal difference between 316 and conventional 304 stainless steel. It improves resistance to localized corrosion, particularly pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chlorides.
For this reason, 316 stainless steel sheet is frequently selected for:
Coastal and marine equipment
Chemical storage and processing equipment
Food and beverage machinery
Pharmaceutical production equipment
Water treatment systems
Heat exchangers
Laboratory equipment
Exterior architectural components
Industrial tanks and fabricated enclosures
The final material grade should be selected according to chloride concentration, operating temperature, chemical composition, cleaning process, pressure, fabrication method and applicable engineering code.

AISI 316 vs 316L Stainless Steel Sheet
316 and 316L have similar chromium, nickel and molybdenum ranges. Their principal difference is carbon content.
| Feature | AISI 316 | AISI 316L |
| UNS Designation | S31600 | S31603 |
| EN Grade | 1.4401 | 1.4404 |
| Maximum Carbon | 0.08% | 0.03% |
| Corrosion Resistance | Very good | Generally similar to 316 |
| Welded Fabrication | Suitable | Preferred for many welded assemblies |
| Elevated-Temperature Strength | Generally higher than 316L | Lower carbon may reduce high-temperature strength |
| Typical Selection | General corrosion-resistant sheet | Welded tanks, vessels and fabricated equipment |
316L is commonly selected for welded components because its lower carbon content reduces the risk of chromium carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone.
For high-temperature structural or pressure applications, the material should be selected according to the applicable design code rather than assuming 316L is suitable for every condition.
316 vs 304 Stainless Steel Sheet
| Feature | 316 Stainless Steel | 304 Stainless Steel |
| Molybdenum | 2.00–3.00% | Normally not intentionally added |
| Chloride Resistance | Better | Lower |
| Pitting and Crevice Resistance | Better | Suitable for less aggressive environments |
| General Formability | Very good | Very good |
| Weldability | Very good | Very good |
| Material Cost | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| Typical Use | Coastal, chemical, food and process equipment | General equipment, kitchen, indoor and architectural applications |
Choose 316 when the application involves increased exposure to chlorides, salt, industrial chemicals or aggressive cleaning media.
Choose 304 when general corrosion resistance is sufficient and controlling material cost is a priority.
Material selection should not be based only on the grade name. Temperature, chloride concentration, crevices, surface finish, cleaning frequency and component design all affect actual corrosion performance.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 316 provides better overall corrosion resistance than 304 in many chloride-containing and industrial environments.
Its main advantages include:
Improved resistance to chloride pitting
Improved resistance to crevice corrosion
Good resistance to many organic and inorganic chemicals
Good performance in food and beverage processing environments
Good atmospheric resistance in many coastal applications
Good cleanability when an appropriate surface finish is used
However, 316 stainless steel is not completely immune to seawater corrosion.
Long-term seawater immersion, stagnant saltwater, high chloride concentration, elevated temperature, deposits, crevices and rough surface finishes can still cause localized corrosion. Duplex stainless steel, 904L or another higher-alloy material may be more appropriate for severe seawater or hot-chloride service.
Dongmeng Group recommends providing the operating medium, chloride level, temperature and cleaning conditions when requesting material-selection support.
Heat Resistance
AISI 316 has good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, but a quoted oxidation temperature must not be used automatically as a pressure-design or corrosion-design temperature.
Continuous exposure in the sensitization range can reduce resistance to subsequent aqueous corrosion. For welded equipment or prolonged exposure in this temperature range, 316L, 316Ti, 321 or another grade may be more appropriate depending on the engineering requirements.
The allowable service temperature must be determined according to:
Continuous or intermittent exposure
Operating atmosphere
Applied mechanical stress
Pressure design code
Corrosive environment
Thermal cycling
Fabrication and welding condition
Forming and Fabrication
AISI 316 stainless steel sheet has good ductility and can be processed using conventional stainless steel fabrication methods.
Available processing includes:
Cut-to-length processing
Precision slitting
Laser cutting
Shearing
Bending
Roll forming
Stamping
Perforating
Surface polishing
Welding
Custom component fabrication
Because austenitic stainless steel work-hardens during forming, tooling, bend radius, forming speed and lubrication should be selected according to material thickness and component geometry.
Carbon-steel tools, grinding dust and handling equipment can contaminate the stainless steel surface. Dedicated stainless steel tooling or proper cleaning procedures are recommended where corrosion performance and appearance are important.
Welding
AISI 316 stainless steel sheet has good weldability and can be welded using TIG, MIG, resistance welding and other conventional fusion-welding processes.
Important fabrication considerations include:
Use a qualified welding procedure
Keep the joint and filler material clean
Avoid contamination from carbon steel
Control heat input and distortion
Remove heat tint where corrosion performance is important
Restore the surface by suitable cleaning and passivation procedures
Consider 316L for welded assemblies where lower carbon content is preferred
Filler-metal selection must follow the welding procedure, base-metal combination and service environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AISI 316 stainless steel sheet?
AISI 316 stainless steel sheet is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel flat product. It offers better resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion than standard 304 stainless steel and is widely used in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, marine and water-treatment applications.
What is the equivalent grade of AISI 316?
AISI 316 is commonly designated UNS S31600. Its comparable European designation is EN 1.4401, X5CrNiMo17-12-2, and the Japanese designation is SUS 316.
These designations are approximate cross-references. The governing material standard must be specified in the purchase order.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L sheet?
316L has a lower maximum carbon content than 316. This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation after welding and makes 316L a common choice for welded tanks, vessels and fabricated process equipment.
Is 316 stainless steel better than 304?
316 provides better resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion because it contains molybdenum. It is generally preferred for coastal, chemical and salt-exposed environments. Grade 304 is usually more economical for normal indoor and less aggressive applications.
Is 316 stainless steel completely resistant to seawater?
No. Although 316 performs better than 304 in chloride environments, it can still experience pitting, crevice corrosion or surface staining in seawater, especially under stagnant, warm, rough-surface or poorly cleaned conditions.
A higher-alloy or duplex grade may be required for severe marine service.
Is annealed 316 stainless steel magnetic?
Annealed 316 stainless steel is generally essentially non-magnetic. Cold working, forming or welding can create a slight magnetic response in some areas.
