Select the Correct Product Standard
"Polished stainless steel pipe" can refer to several technically different products. The correct standard should be selected according to the service condition rather than surface appearance alone.
| Standard | Product Type | Typical Applications |
| ASTM A312 | Seamless or welded austenitic stainless steel pipe | Chemical processing, industrial pipelines, water systems and corrosive fluid service |
| ASTM A554 | Welded stainless steel mechanical tubing | Railings, furniture, architectural structures, frames and decorative fabrication |
| ASTM A270 | Seamless or welded sanitary tubing | Food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical and hygienic processing equipment |
| ASTM A269 | General-service stainless steel tubing | Instrumentation, equipment, fluid lines and general engineering |
| EN 10217-7 | Welded stainless steel pressure tube | European industrial pressure applications |
ASTM A312 covers seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipe intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service. ASTM A554 covers mechanical tubing where appearance, mechanical properties or corrosion resistance is required. ASTM A270 covers sanitary tubing with special surface-finish requirements.
Polished Surface Finish Options
| Finish | Appearance | Typical Use |
| 180 Grit | Visible directional satin lines | General fabrication and indoor structures |
| 240 Grit | Finer and more uniform satin surface | Food equipment, handrails and architectural components |
| 320 Grit | Smooth fine-brushed appearance | Decorative products and exposed equipment |
| 400 Grit | Bright polished surface with reduced polishing lines | Premium architectural and equipment applications |
| 600/800 Grit | Highly reflective mirror-like appearance | Luxury decoration, display systems and visual applications |
| No.4 Finish | Uniform general-purpose brushed finish | Kitchens, elevators, equipment covers and architectural work |
| Hairline Finish | Long continuous directional lines | Interior panels, furniture and decorative tubing |
| ID Mechanical Polish | Controlled internal surface | Food, beverage, pharmaceutical and clean-process systems |
| Electropolished Finish | Bright, cleanable surface with reduced microscopic peaks | High-purity and hygienic processing systems |
Important Surface-Finish Note
A polishing grit number and a measured Ra value are not interchangeable specifications. The resulting roughness depends on the starting surface, abrasive system, polishing pressure, number of passes and measurement method.
For hygienic or high-purity projects, buyers should specify the required maximum Ra value, whether it applies to the internal diameter, external diameter or both, and the required inspection method. Surface-finish standards often define the production route rather than guaranteeing one universal appearance or roughness value.
Stainless Steel Grade Selection
| Grade | Main Characteristics | Recommended Applications |
| 201 | Economical grade for mild indoor environments | Interior decoration, furniture and low-corrosion applications |
| 304 | Good general corrosion resistance and fabrication performance | Architectural tubing, food equipment, handrails and general industry |
| 304L | Lower-carbon version of 304 with improved resistance around welded areas | Welded assemblies, tanks, hygienic equipment and process systems |
| 316 | Molybdenum-alloyed grade with improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion | Coastal structures, chemical equipment and demanding food-processing environments |
| 316L | Low-carbon 316 grade widely used for welded and hygienic systems | Pharmaceutical, food, beverage, marine and chemical applications |
| 321 | Titanium-stabilized grade for elevated-temperature service | Exhaust systems, heat-related equipment and thermal processing |
| 430 | Ferritic stainless steel with economical decorative performance | Indoor decoration and applications with moderate corrosion exposure |
| 2205 | Duplex grade with high strength and improved chloride resistance | Marine, chemical, offshore and demanding industrial environments |
The molybdenum content in 316/316L gives it substantially better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion than conventional 304/304L stainless steel in many aggressive environments. Actual grade selection must still consider chloride concentration, temperature, cleaning chemicals, stress and fabrication conditions.
Polished Pipe Types We Supply
Mirror-Polished Stainless Steel Pipe
Mirror-polished pipe provides a highly reflective surface for premium architectural and decorative projects. Common grades include 304, 304L, 316 and 316L.
Applications include:
Luxury handrails and balustrades
Hotel and retail decoration
Display systems
Furniture components
Architectural façades
Decorative equipment frames
Satin and No.4 Stainless Steel Tube
Satin and No.4 finishes provide a uniform directional appearance that is easier to maintain than a full mirror finish. These finishes are widely used for commercial kitchens, elevators, equipment frames, handrails and exposed structural components.
Hygienic ID/OD Polished Tube
For food, dairy, beverage and pharmaceutical projects, Dongmeng Group can supply stainless steel tube with specified internal and external surface conditions.
Purchase specifications should identify:
Material grade
Applicable sanitary standard
Internal and external Ra limits
Mechanical or electropolished finish
Weld-seam treatment
Cleaning and passivation requirements
Required inspection and documentation
Polished Industrial Stainless Steel Pipe
ASTM A312 pipe can be externally polished when a clean appearance, improved cleanability or exposed installation is required. The pressure rating remains dependent on the pipe grade, wall schedule, temperature, applicable design code and joining method-not the polished surface.
Custom Processing Services
Dongmeng Group supports project-based processing for distributors, fabricators, contractors and equipment manufacturers.
Available services include:
External surface grinding and polishing
Internal diameter polishing
Precision cutting to fixed length
End beveling
Deburring and edge finishing
Pickling and passivation
Drilling, bending and fabrication
Protective-film application
Custom marking and labeling
Project-specific export packaging
Chemical passivation can be specified when required to remove surface contamination and support formation of a clean passive surface. ASTM A967 covers several passivation treatment methods and verification tests for stainless steel parts.
Manufacturing and Quality Control
A typical polished stainless steel pipe order follows these control stages:
Raw material verification
Material grade, heat number and chemical composition documentation are checked before production.
Pipe forming or seamless production
The pipe is manufactured according to the applicable welded or seamless product standard.
Heat treatment and weld treatment
Solution annealing, weld-bead treatment or other processing is completed when required by the product specification.
Dimensional inspection
Outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, roundness and end condition are checked.
Surface polishing
The selected abrasive sequence is used to produce the required satin, brushed, No.4 or mirror appearance.
Surface inspection
Polishing consistency, scratches, dents, weld appearance and contamination are inspected under controlled lighting.
Roughness measurement
Ra testing can be performed when a numerical surface-roughness limit is included in the purchase order.
Final testing and documentation
PMI, hydrostatic testing, eddy-current testing, mechanical testing or third-party inspection can be arranged according to the applicable standard and order requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between polished stainless steel pipe and polished stainless steel tube?
Pipe is generally specified by nominal pipe size and schedule and is commonly used for fluid or pressure service. Tube is normally ordered by actual outside diameter and wall thickness and is often used for mechanical, architectural or hygienic applications.
Which grade is better, 304 or 316 polished stainless steel pipe?
304 is suitable for many general architectural, food and indoor applications. 316 contains molybdenum and is generally preferred where there is increased exposure to chlorides, coastal conditions or aggressive cleaning chemicals.
Can you supply mirror-polished 316L stainless steel pipe?
Yes. Mirror-polished 316L welded or seamless products can be supplied subject to the required standard, diameter, wall thickness, polishing level and quantity.
Can the inside of the pipe be polished?
Yes. Internal diameter polishing is available for selected sizes. The purchase order should specify the required maximum Ra, polished length, inspection method and whether weld-seam leveling is required.
Does a higher polishing grit always mean a specific Ra value?
No. Grit describes the abrasive used in the polishing process, while Ra is a measured roughness value. Buyers requiring hygienic or high-purity surfaces should specify and inspect the maximum Ra value.
Is mirror-polished pipe suitable for pressure service?
The mirror finish does not determine pressure capacity. Pressure suitability depends on the material grade, manufacturing standard, dimensions, wall thickness, temperature, joining method and applicable piping design code.
Can you provide a Mill Test Certificate?
Yes. Mill Test Certificates and inspection documents can be supplied according to the purchase order. EN 10204 3.1 documentation should be stated clearly during the quotation stage when required.
Do you provide custom lengths and packaging?
Yes. Fixed-length cutting, project labeling, protective sleeves, wooden cases and seaworthy export packaging are available.
