Black stainless steel sheet is a cold-rolled stainless steel substrate with a decorative black surface.
For architectural and interior projects, PVD-Physical Vapour Deposition-is one of the most widely used coloring methods. A thin decorative layer is deposited onto a prepared stainless steel surface in a vacuum chamber.
Because the coating follows the texture of the substrate, the final appearance depends heavily on the base finish. A mirror-polished substrate produces a deep reflective black, while hairline, satin or sandblasted substrates create softer matte effects.

PVD surfaces are more resistant than many conventional decorative finishes, but they are not scratch-proof. Abrasive tools, steel wool and harsh cleaning chemicals should be avoided.

Black PVD stainless steel can be cold formed when the decorative surface is protected and clean tooling is used.
For critical visible surfaces, bending radius, grain direction and protective film should be confirmed before mass production. A finished sample is recommended for complex formed components.
Welding or other high-temperature joining processes can discolor or remove the black coating around the heat-affected area. For exposed decorative joints, concealed mechanical fasteners, adhesive bonding or coating after fabrication may provide a better visual result.

Is black stainless steel made from real stainless steel?
Yes. Decorative black stainless steel sheets use stainless steel substrates such as 201, 304, 316 or 430 with an additional black surface treatment.
Is black PVD stainless steel scratch-proof?
No decorative surface is completely scratch-proof. PVD provides a durable metallic finish, but steel wool, abrasive pads, sharp tools and rough handling can still damage the surface.
Can black stainless steel sheets be used outdoors?
