ASTM A376/A376M covers several common austenitic stainless steel grades, with the most prevalent being:

TP304H: The workhorse grade for high-temperature steam service. The "H" denotes a higher carbon content (0.04-0.10%) for improved high-temperature strength.

TP316H: Similar to 304H but with the addition of Molybdenum for better creep strength and corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides.

TP321H: Stabilized with Titanium to prevent chromium carbide precipitation during welding and exposure to high temperatures, reducing susceptibility to intergranular corrosion.

TP347H: Stabilized with Niobium (and sometimes Tantalum) for excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and very high creep strength.

Requirements and Features

 

Seamless Manufacturing: All pipe supplied to this standard must be seamless, meaning it is pierced from a solid billet. This eliminates the longitudinal weld seam found in welded pipe (like ASTM A312), which is a potential point of failure under extreme cyclic conditions.

High-Temperature Properties: The standard places a strong emphasis on properties important at high temperatures:

Creep Strength: The ability to resist deformation over long periods under stress and high heat.

Stress Rupture Strength: The ability to withstand fracture under constant load at high temperatures.

Oxidation Resistance: The formation of a stable chromium oxide layer that protects the metal from further degradation.

Heat Treatment (Solution Annealing): All pipes must be heat treated (solution annealed) and rapidly quenched to dissolve carbides and achieve a homogeneous austenitic structure. This is crucial for maximizing corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Hydrostatic Testing: Each pipe must undergo a non-destructive hydrostatic test. The test pressure is calculated to induce a stress in the pipe wall equal to a specified percentage of the steel's minimum yield strength.

Non-Destructive Examination (NDE): The standard requires eddy current or ultrasonic testing as a minimum. This is to ensure the internal and external soundness of the pipe and to detect any imperfections that could lead to failure.

Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties: The standard has strict limits on chemical composition (Carbon, Chromium, Nickel, etc.) and room-temperature mechanical properties (Tensile Strength, Yield Strength, Elongation) to ensure material consistency and performance.
