ASTM A358 pipes are manufactured in compliance with various international standards, including ASTM, DIN, JIS, GB, AISI, and others. ASTM A358 Class 1 pipes are produced using the Electric Fusion Welding (EFW) process.
The material composition of ASTM A358 TP304 includes approximately 18% chromium, 8% nickel, along with manganese, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus. In comparison, ASTM A358 316L offers superior corrosion resistance due to the addition of molybdenum, which enhances its ability to withstand chloride ion attack. While TP304 remains the most widely used grade due to its balanced strength and cost efficiency, 316L is preferred in more aggressive environments.
These stainless steel pipes are available in a wide range of sizes, from 8 inches to 72 inches in diameter, with wall thicknesses ranging from 3mm to 60mm. Standard lengths can extend up to 6 meters, as seen in grades like UNS S31254.
ASTM A358 TP304L EFW pipes can be supplied with various surface finishes, including pickled, bright annealed (BA), No. 4 brushed, and electropolished, to meet different application needs. Additionally, there are distinctions between Class 1 and Class 2 within the same grade: while Class 1 is more commonly used, Class 2 offers enhanced mechanical properties, making it suitable for specialized applications requiring higher performance.

Classes of ASTM A358 Stainless Steel Welded Pipe
ASTM A358 CL1 - A358 304 Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be completely radiographed.
ASTM A358 CL2 - A358 316L Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes. No radiography is required.
ASTM A358 CL3 - Pipe shall be single welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be completely radiographed.
ASTM A358 CL4 - Same as Class 3 except that the weld pass exposed to the inside pipe surface may be made without the addition of filler metal.
ASTM A358 CL5 - Pipe shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be spot radiographed.
