What Is ASTM A358 Grade 304 Pipe?

ASTM A358 TP304 Grade 304 EFW Stainless Steel Pipe 2

ASTM A358 Grade 304 is an EFW austenitic stainless steel pipe fabricated from stainless steel plate, rather than a generic ERW tube.

The steel plate used to manufacture the pipe is specified through ASTM A240/A240M, while the pipe must also comply with the applicable general requirements of ASTM A999/A999M unless ASTM A358 specifies otherwise.

Grade 304 provides a practical balance of:

Corrosion resistance in many industrial environments · weldability · ductility · fabrication capability · high-temperature oxidation resistance · widely available raw material.

It is commonly selected for industrial process piping where chloride exposure is moderate and the additional molybdenum resistance of 316/316L is not required.

ASTM A358 Class 1 vs Class 2 vs Class 3 vs Class 4 vs Class 5

Selecting the correct A358 Class is one of the most important purchasing decisions.

Class Welding Configuration Filler Metal Radiographic Examination
Class 1 Double welded Filler metal in all passes Complete radiography
Class 2 Double welded Filler metal in all passes No radiography required by the base Class requirement
Class 3 Single welded Filler metal in all passes Complete radiography
Class 4 Single welded Inside/root pass may be made without filler metal under specified conditions Complete radiography
Class 5 Double welded Filler metal Spot radiography

These Classes do not represent increasing mechanical strength from Class 1 to Class 5. They primarily define welding construction and radiographic inspection requirements.

Which A358 Class Should You Choose?

Class 1 is appropriate when the project requires double-welded construction combined with complete radiographic examination.

Class 2 may be specified when double welding is required but full RT is not required by the purchasing specification.

Class 3 and Class 4 apply to single-welded construction, with Class 4 allowing a defined internal weld pass without added filler metal.

Class 5 combines double-welded construction with spot radiography.

The final selection should follow the piping design specification, applicable pressure code, engineering company requirements and end-user inspection plan.

Material and Welding Requirements

ASTM A358 pipe is manufactured from plate conforming to an applicable grade under ASTM A240/A240M.

For Grade 304, the UNS designation is S30400.

The longitudinal joint is produced as a full-penetration butt weld using fusion welding procedures. ASTM A358 references welding requirements associated with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section IX and applicable AWS filler-metal specifications.

For ASTM A358 Grade 304, compatible filler metal selections commonly include the 308 family where permitted by the applicable welding procedure and project specification. The actual filler metal, WPS and PQR should be verified against the purchase specification.

ASTM A358 Grade 304 Chemical Composition

Because ASTM A358 pipe is fabricated from ASTM A240 plate, chemistry should be evaluated according to the applicable ASTM A240 Type 304 / UNS S30400 requirements rather than copying an ASTM A312 pipe chemistry table.

Element ASTM A240 Type 304 Reference
Carbon, C ≤ 0.07%
Manganese, Mn ≤ 2.00%
Silicon, Si ≤ 0.75%
Phosphorus, P ≤ 0.045%
Sulfur, S ≤ 0.030%
Chromium, Cr 17.5–19.5%
Nickel, Ni 8.0–10.5%
Nitrogen, N ≤ 0.10%

Important: Contract chemistry should always be checked against the ASTM A240/A240M edition specified in the purchase order and the actual Mill Test Certificate.

Mechanical Properties of Type 304 Base Material

Typical ASTM A240 requirements for annealed Type 304 include:

Property Requirement
Tensile Strength ≥ 515 MPa
0.2% Yield Strength ≥ 205 MPa
Elongation ≥ 40%
Hardness Approx. ≤ 92 HRB / 200 HBW

These values describe the applicable Type 304 base material requirements. Finished ASTM A358 pipe must additionally satisfy the applicable pipe, weld and testing requirements specified by ASTM A358/A999 and the purchase order.

Heat Treatment

Unless an alternative condition is specifically ordered, ASTM A358 pipe is supplied in the heat-treated condition required by the applicable standard.

Heat treatment is important for restoring an appropriate austenitic microstructure after fabrication and for controlling corrosion-related performance around welded regions.

If a purchaser requires a special heat-treatment condition, reduced final heat-treatment temperature or no final pipe heat treatment, this must be clearly identified in the purchase order together with the corresponding marking and project requirements.

Inspection and Testing

Finished ASTM A358 pipe is subject to important mechanical and pressure-integrity testing.

The standard includes requirements for:

Transverse tension testing

Used to verify weld-joint tensile performance.

Transverse guided-bend weld testing

Used to evaluate weld soundness and ductility.

Hydrostatic testing

Used to verify pressure integrity of the finished pipe.

Radiographic testing

RT requirements depend on whether Class 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 is specified.

Additional project inspection can include PMI, dimensional inspection, surface inspection, penetrant testing, additional radiography, ultrasonic examination or third-party inspection when specified in the purchase order.

ASTM A358 TP304 Dimensions

ASTM A358 purchasing requirements identify pipe size by outside diameter and nominal wall thickness. The buyer should therefore specify the actual OD × WT rather than relying only on a generic Schedule designation.

Dongmeng can evaluate both standard Schedule dimensions and project-specific large-diameter configurations.

Typical enquiry format:

OD × Wall Thickness × Length

Example:

610 mm OD × 8 mm WT × 6000 mm Length - ASTM A358 Grade 304 Class 1

Where applicable, dimensions may be coordinated with ASME B36.19M or ASME B36.10M, while non-standard OD and wall combinations can be evaluated according to manufacturing and project requirements.

For large-diameter or heavy-wall projects, send the required drawing or piping material specification before ordering.

ASTM A358 TP304 vs ASTM A312 TP304

These specifications should not be treated as interchangeable.

Item ASTM A358 Grade 304 ASTM A312 TP304
Main Product Type EFW welded pipe Seamless, welded or heavily cold-worked welded pipe
Raw Material Route ASTM A240 plate Pipe manufacturing route under A312
Filler Metal Used in A358 welding according to Class/process Different welding requirements
Class 1–5 Yes No
Radiography by Class Yes No A358-style Class system
Typical Procurement Focus Large-diameter/project EFW piping General stainless process piping
Custom Large Diameter Major advantage More dependent on manufacturing route

Choose the specification required by the piping design code and project specification rather than selecting only by diameter or price.

Where ASTM A358 Grade 304 Works Well

Grade 304 is commonly considered for industrial environments involving:

Chemical and process piping with moderate corrosion exposure
Power-generation auxiliary piping
Industrial water systems
Pulp and paper equipment
General refinery and petrochemical utility lines
Heat-transfer and process systems
Food and beverage utility piping where project hygiene requirements are separately specified
Large-diameter plant piping
High-temperature industrial service within applicable design limits

For pressure-critical installations, operating pressure, temperature, design code, corrosion allowance, weld efficiency and inspection class must be evaluated by the responsible piping engineer.

Where 304 May Not Be the Best Choice

A technically useful product page should also explain where not to use Grade 304.

Chloride-Rich Environments

304 does not contain the molybdenum addition used in 316/316L. In chloride-containing service, particularly where temperature, concentration or stagnant conditions increase, susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion must be evaluated.

Consider 316L or a higher-alloy material when chloride exposure is significant.

Seawater and Marine Process Systems

Do not automatically specify 304 for continuous seawater exposure.

Depending on temperature, chloride concentration and design conditions, duplex, super duplex or higher-alloy stainless steel may be required.

Aggressive Chemical Media

"Stainless steel" does not mean resistance to every acid or chemical.

Specify:

Chemical / medium
Concentration
Operating temperature
Pressure
Chloride level
pH
Continuous or intermittent exposure

Our material team can then compare 304 with 316L, 904L, duplex stainless steel or nickel alloys.

ASTM A358 TP304 or TP304L?

Choose 304 when standard corrosion resistance and mechanical properties meet the design requirement.

Consider 304L / S30403 where lower carbon content is preferred for welded fabrication and resistance to sensitization-related intergranular corrosion is important.

Do not substitute 304L for 304-or vice versa-without checking the project specification, design allowable stresses and material certificate requirements.
