WHAT IS AISI 321 STAINLESS STEEL?

AISI 321 stainless steel is an 18-8 austenitic stainless steel similar to 304, but stabilized with titanium (Ti).

Key composition:

Chromium (Cr): 17–19%

Nickel (Ni): 9–12%

Titanium (Ti): Stabilizing element

Carbon (C): ≤0.08%

👉 Titanium binds with carbon to prevent chromium carbide formation
👉 This improves resistance to weld decay and intergranular corrosion

AISI 321 / UNS S32100 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel that offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (425–850°C). It maintains high strength and oxidation resistance in continuous service up to 900°C, making it a top choice for heat exchangers, furnace components, exhaust systems, and pressure vessels.

Why Titanium Stabilization Matters in 321

Titanium in 321 stainless steel:

Combines with carbon to form stable TiC

Prevents chromium carbide precipitation

Avoids intergranular corrosion after welding

Maintains corrosion resistance in heat-affected zones

👉 This makes 321 ideal for welded high-temperature applications
