ASTM A335 P12 pipe
ASTM A335 P12 Seamless Alloy Steel Pipe

ASTM A335 P12 seamless alloy steel pipe is a chromium-molybdenum seamless pressure pipe designed for elevated-temperature service in power generation, refinery, petrochemical, boiler and industrial piping systems.

Grade P12 contains approximately 0.80–1.25% chromium and 0.44–0.65% molybdenum, providing better elevated-temperature strength and oxidation resistance than conventional carbon steel while maintaining practical forming and welding characteristics.

Dongmeng Group supplies ASTM A335 Grade P12 pipe for project-based requirements including specified outside diameter, wall thickness or Schedule, heat treatment, end preparation, inspection, marking and documentation.

For procurement, P12 should not be selected only by operating temperature. Design pressure, temperature, corrosion environment, applicable piping code, allowable stress, welding procedure and required service life should all be considered before final material selection.

Why Specify ASTM A335 P12?

ASTM A335 covers seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe intended for high-temperature service. Grade P12 is one of the lower-alloy chromium-molybdenum grades within the specification.

Compared with ordinary carbon steel piping, the chromium and molybdenum additions help P12 maintain mechanical performance at elevated temperature.

P12 can be considered where the project requires:

Elevated-temperature pressure piping

Chromium-molybdenum alloy construction

Seamless pipe manufacture

Better high-temperature performance than standard carbon steel

Compatibility with established Cr-Mo fabrication and welding procedures

ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 material compliance

Important: material suitability must ultimately be verified against the engineering design code and actual pressure-temperature conditions.

Products Description

MTC / EN 10204 3.1 available according to order
Applications Power, refinery, petrochemical, boiler and high-temperature piping

ASTM A335 P12 Chemical Composition

Element ASTM A335 P12
Carbon, C 0.05–0.15%
Manganese, Mn 0.30–0.61%
Phosphorus, P ≤ 0.025%
Sulfur, S ≤ 0.025%
Silicon, Si ≤ 0.50%
Chromium, Cr 0.80–1.25%
Molybdenum, Mo 0.44–0.65%

The chromium-molybdenum combination is the main reason P12 is categorized as a Cr-Mo alloy steel.

Chromium contributes to oxidation resistance and hardenability, while molybdenum helps improve strength retention at elevated temperatures.

The ASTM standard identifies UNS K11562 for Grade P12.

Mechanical Properties

Typical minimum specified room-temperature tensile requirements for ASTM A335 P12 include:

Property Requirement
Tensile Strength ≥ 415 MPa
Yield Strength ≥ 220 MPa
Elongation According to applicable ASTM specimen and wall-thickness requirements
Hardness According to ASTM A335 requirements

For procurement purposes, the room-temperature tensile values should not be used by themselves to determine maximum operating temperature.

High-temperature piping design should instead use the allowable stresses and design rules specified by the applicable engineering code.

The minimum tensile strength of approximately 415 MPa and minimum yield strength of 220 MPa are consistent with published ASTM A335 P12 data.

Heat Treatment of P12 Pipe

ASTM A335 P12 may be supplied using permitted heat-treatment routes including:

Full annealing

Isothermal annealing

Normalizing and tempering

Subcritical annealing

For normalized-and-tempered P12, the applicable ASTM requirements specify a minimum tempering temperature of 650°C / 1200°F.

For subcritical annealing, the specified range is approximately 650–705°C / 1200–1300°F.

Heat-treatment condition should be identified and verified through the material documentation when required by the purchase order.

Available Sizes and Pipe Schedules

ASTM A335 P12 can be supplied in a range of outside diameters and wall thicknesses according to project demand and available mill production routes.

The actual available OD × WT combination should always be confirmed before issuing the purchase order, particularly for heavy-wall, large-diameter or low-quantity requirements.

P12 Pipe Manufacturing Process

A typical seamless P12 production route may include:

Billet Inspection → Heating → Piercing → Hot Rolling / Sizing → Heat Treatment → Straightening → Cutting → Dimensional Inspection → NDT → Hydrostatic Testing → Marking → Packing

Because ASTM A335 P12 is a seamless pipe specification, an ERW or conventional welded pipe should not be represented as ASTM A335 P12.

This is an important procurement point when comparing quotations from different suppliers.

Inspection and Quality Control

For high-temperature pressure piping, price should not be the only purchasing criterion.

A qualified P12 order should establish the inspection and documentation requirements before production.

Depending on the purchase specification, inspection may include:

Chemical Analysis

Verification of heat chemistry against ASTM A335 P12 requirements.

Tensile Testing

Verification of specified tensile and yield properties.

Hardness Testing

Used where required by ASTM A335 and the applicable heat-treatment condition.

Hydrostatic Testing

ASTM A335 requires each length of pipe to be hydrostatically tested, subject to the applicable specification provisions.

Non-Destructive Examination

Each pipe is also subject to the applicable nondestructive examination requirements specified by ASTM A335.

Dimensional Inspection

Inspection may include:

Outside diameter

Wall thickness

Length

Straightness

End preparation

Surface condition

Additional third-party inspection can be arranged when specified in the purchase order.

Material Traceability

For pressure and high-temperature projects, traceability is critical.

Each supply lot should maintain traceability from raw material and heat number through heat treatment, inspection and final pipe marking.

Documents can be supplied according to the agreed purchase specification, including:

Material Test Certificate

Chemical analysis

Mechanical test results

Heat treatment information

NDT records where applicable

Hydrostatic test information

Dimensional inspection

Heat number traceability

Packing list

Third-party inspection documents when ordered

EN 10204 3.1 certification can be supplied when specified in the order.

ASTM A335 P12 vs P11 vs P22

P12, P11 and P22 are frequently compared because all belong to the ASTM A335 Cr-Mo alloy-steel family.

Grade Cr Mo Procurement Position
P12 0.80–1.25% 0.44–0.65% Lower-alloy Cr-Mo grade
P11 1.00–1.50% 0.44–0.65% Similar Mo with slightly higher Cr
P22 1.90–2.60% 0.87–1.13% Higher Cr-Mo alloy content

Choose P12 When

The engineering specification explicitly requires P12 or when the calculated design conditions support the lower-alloy Cr-Mo grade.

Consider P11 When

The project specification requires P11 chemistry or its particular allowable-stress and fabrication characteristics.

Consider P22 When

Higher Cr-Mo content and the corresponding elevated-temperature design properties are required.

Do Not Substitute Grades Only on Price

P12, P11 and P22 should not be treated as interchangeable commodities.

Before substitution, check:

Design code

Allowable stress

Design temperature

Design pressure

Corrosion allowance

Oxidation environment

Welding procedure qualification

PWHT requirements

Existing piping metallurgy

Client or EPC specification

Welding and Fabrication Considerations

ASTM A335 pipe is intended to be suitable for operations such as bending, flanging and fusion welding when proper procedures are used.

However, P12 is a Cr-Mo alloy steel and should not be welded using the same assumptions applied to ordinary carbon steel.

Welding engineering should consider:

Base-metal thickness

Carbon equivalent

Joint design

Preheat requirement

Interpass temperature

Filler metal selection

Hydrogen control

Heat input

Post-weld heat treatment

Hardness control

Applicable ASME or project welding procedure

Actual preheat and PWHT parameters should be determined by the qualified WPS/PQR and governing construction code, rather than using a generic temperature from a product webpage.

This is especially important for thick-wall pressure piping.

Typical Applications

ASTM A335 P12 seamless pipe can be used in appropriately engineered systems such as:

Power Generation

High-temperature steam piping

Boiler piping

Auxiliary steam systems

Power-plant process piping

Oil & Gas and Refining

Refinery process lines

Heater-related piping

Hot hydrocarbon service

High-temperature utility piping

Petrochemical Plants

Process piping

Heat-transfer systems

Elevated-temperature pressure lines

Industrial Plants

High-temperature process systems

Pressure equipment interconnecting piping

Thermal-processing installations

The final grade must always be selected according to actual design conditions.

P12 Is Not Automatically the Right Grade for Every High-Temperature Line

This distinction is important for professional procurement.

A buyer should not ask:

"Can P12 work at 500°C?"

without also defining pressure and design conditions.

The better question is:

"Does P12 satisfy the allowable stress, pressure-temperature design, corrosion conditions and construction-code requirements of this specific line?"

Two pipelines operating at the same temperature can require different materials because their:

pressure,

wall thickness,

corrosion mechanism,

expected service life,

welding design,

cyclic loading,

may be completely different.
