Carbon Steel Checker Plate Supplier
ASTM A786 · A36 · S235JR · SS400 · Q235B
Carbon steel checker plate with diamond, teardrop, lentil and five-bar raised patterns for industrial flooring, stair treads, walkways, ramps, vehicle decks and fabrication projects.
What Is Carbon Steel Checker Plate?
Carbon steel checker plate is a hot-rolled steel sheet or plate with regularly raised figures on one surface and a relatively smooth reverse side.
The raised pattern increases surface texture and can improve traction compared with smooth steel plate. It is therefore widely used for industrial floors, platforms, access stairs, loading areas, truck bodies and machinery decks.
Checker plate is also called:
Carbon steel chequered plate
Mild steel checker plate
Steel diamond plate
Steel tread plate
Steel floor plate
Embossed steel plate
The terms describe a similar product category, but the exact pattern, steel grade, dimensional tolerance and mechanical properties must be confirmed in the purchase specification.
The raised pattern does not provide a universal anti-slip rating. Actual slip performance depends on pattern geometry, surface contamination, footwear, slope, drainage and operating conditions. Projects with mandatory slip-resistance requirements should specify the required testing method or rating.
ASTM A786 Floor Plate and Material Standards
The product standard and material grade should be identified separately when ordering.
ASTM A786/A786M
ASTM A786/A786M is the principal ASTM specification for hot-rolled carbon, low-alloy, high-strength low-alloy and alloy steel floor plates.
It covers rolled floor plates with raised figures at regular intervals on one surface. Products are used for flooring, stairways, transportation equipment and general structural applications.
ASTM A786 covers floor plate products with a maximum thickness of 25 mm.
ASTM A36
ASTM A36 is a material specification for carbon structural steel. An order may therefore specify an ASTM A786 floor plate manufactured from ASTM A36 steel.
A recommended description is:
ASTM A786 Carbon Steel Floor Plate, Material Grade ASTM A36
EN 10025-2 and EN 10363
For European projects, S235JR, S275JR and S355JR material grades are normally specified under EN 10025-2.
EN 10363 specifies dimensional and shape tolerances for continuously hot-rolled uncoated patterned steel strip and plate or sheet cut from wide strip. It covers nominal thicknesses up to 20 mm.
DIN 59220 has been withdrawn, and EN 10363 should be considered for current European patterned steel plate tolerance requirements.
JIS and GB Grades
SS400 is commonly ordered under JIS G3101, while Q235B and Q355B are commonly supplied for projects using Chinese structural steel grades.
The grade standard, dimensional tolerance, pattern type and inspection document should all be stated separately in the purchase order.
Carbon Steel Checker Plate Grade Selection
| Standard System | Common Grade | Typical Selection |
| ASTM | A36 | General flooring, stairs, fabrication and structural use |
| ASTM | A572 Grade 50 | Higher-strength platforms and structural fabrication |
| EN | S235JR | General European structural and fabrication projects |
| EN | S275JR | Moderate-strength structural applications |
| EN | S355JR | Higher-strength platforms and supporting structures |
| JIS | SS400 | General fabrication and industrial flooring |
| GB | Q235B | General-purpose mild steel checker plate |
| GB | Q355B | Higher-strength structural checker plate |
Grade comparison tables are for preliminary selection only. A36, S235JR, SS400 and Q235B are frequently compared commercially, but they are not automatically interchangeable.
Final approval must be based on the applicable material standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, impact requirements, thickness range and project design specification.
Available Checker Plate Patterns
Diamond Pattern
Raised diamond or lozenge-shaped figures arranged across the plate surface.
Commonly selected for:
Industrial floors
Truck and trailer decks
Tool boxes
Access covers
General fabrication
Teardrop Pattern
Elongated raised figures shaped like teardrops or short bars.
Commonly selected for:
Walkways
Platforms
Stair treads
Equipment access areas
Construction flooring
Lentil Pattern
Rounded or elliptical raised figures arranged in a repeating pattern.
Commonly used in European and industrial flooring applications.
Five-Bar Pattern
Groups of five raised bars arranged at alternating angles.
Availability depends on the steel mill and regional specification. Five-bar patterns are also common in aluminum checker plate, so the required material must be clearly identified as carbon steel.
EN 10363 Pattern Designations
EN 10363 includes standardized patterned surface designs. When an EN pattern designation is required, it should be stated in the enquiry instead of relying only on commercial descriptions such as diamond or teardrop.
Pattern appearance, height, pitch and orientation can vary between mills. Pattern samples or technical drawings should be approved for appearance-sensitive or repeat-production orders.

Base Thickness and Pattern Height
Checker plate quotations should distinguish between:
Base plate thickness
Raised pattern height
Overall thickness
Pattern type
Theoretical or actual unit weight
A description such as "5 mm checker plate" may refer to the base thickness or the approximate overall thickness, depending on the market and mill.
To avoid disputes, the purchase order should state:
5 mm nominal base thickness, excluding raised pattern height
or
5 mm overall thickness, including raised pattern
The measurement method and dimensional tolerance should be agreed before production.
Checker Plate Weight Calculation
The theoretical mass of the smooth carbon steel base plate can be estimated using:
Weight per square metre = Base Thickness × 7.85
Where:
Thickness is measured in millimetres
Result is expressed in kg/m²
Carbon steel density is approximately 7,850 kg/m³
Theoretical Base Plate Weight
| Base Thickness | Base Weight |
| 2.5 mm | 19.63 kg/m² |
| 3.0 mm | 23.55 kg/m² |
| 4.0 mm | 31.40 kg/m² |
| 4.5 mm | 35.33 kg/m² |
| 5.0 mm | 39.25 kg/m² |
| 6.0 mm | 47.10 kg/m² |
| 8.0 mm | 62.80 kg/m² |
| 10.0 mm | 78.50 kg/m² |
| 12.0 mm | 94.20 kg/m² |
The raised pattern adds additional metal, so the actual checker plate weight may be higher than the smooth base plate calculation.
For commercial quotations, container loading and structural calculations, use the mill's nominal mass table, MTC information or actual weighed mass rather than relying only on the smooth-plate formula.
How to Select the Correct Checker Plate
Checker plate thickness should not be selected only by application name.
The purchaser or project engineer should consider:
Design load
Concentrated and distributed loads
Unsupported span
Support spacing
Plate deflection
Dynamic or impact loads
Pedestrian or vehicle traffic
Corrosion allowance
Outdoor exposure
Pattern orientation
Welding and fabrication method
Applicable building or structural code
A plate suitable for a continuously supported floor may not be suitable for the same load over a wide unsupported span.
Xi'an Dongmeng Group Co., Ltd. can review the requested grade, dimensions, pattern and fabrication requirements, but final structural thickness and support design should be approved by the project engineer.

Shot blasting removes loose scale and prepares the surface for primer, paint or protective coating.
Primed or Painted Surface
Primer and paint systems can be applied according to the required colour, coating thickness and project environment.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Checker Plate
Hot-dip galvanizing can provide improved outdoor corrosion protection.
The purchaser should confirm:
Galvanizing standard
Zinc coating requirement
Fabrication before or after galvanizing
Drain and vent hole requirements
Permitted distortion
Surface appearance
Touch-up requirements
For welded stair treads and fabricated platforms, galvanizing after fabrication is generally preferable so that cut edges and weld areas are also protected.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between checker plate, chequered plate and tread plate?
They are regional names for steel plate with a raised pattern on one surface. "Chequered plate" is common in British English, while "checker plate," "tread plate," "diamond plate" and "floor plate" are frequently used in North America and international trade.
Is ASTM A786 the same as ASTM A36?
No. ASTM A786 is a floor-plate product specification. ASTM A36 is a carbon structural steel material specification. A correct purchase description may be ASTM A786 floor plate manufactured from ASTM A36 steel.
Which grades are commonly supplied?
Common grades include ASTM A36, S235JR, S275JR, S355JR, SS400, Q235B and Q355B. The required standard and mechanical properties should be stated instead of relying only on commercial grade comparison.
Can you supply galvanized checker plate?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanizing can be arranged for corrosion protection. The galvanizing standard, coating requirement, dimensions, fabrication sequence and permitted distortion should be confirmed before ordering.
How is checker plate thickness measured?
The enquiry should specify whether the thickness refers to the base plate excluding the raised pattern or the overall thickness including the pattern. The measurement method should be agreed before production.
How do I calculate checker plate weight?
Smooth base plate weight can be estimated using thickness in millimetres × 7.85 kg/m². The raised pattern adds mass, so actual order and freight weight should be confirmed from the mill mass table or measured weight.
Can checker plate be cut and bent?
Yes. Cutting, bending, drilling and drawing-based fabrication are available. Processing capability depends on the grade, base thickness, pattern height, dimensions and required tolerance.
Is checker plate completely slip-proof?
No steel surface is universally slip-proof. Raised patterns improve traction, but performance depends on oil, water, dust, footwear, slope and pattern design. Specify a tested slip-resistance requirement when required by the project.
Can carbon steel checker plate be used outdoors?
It can be used outdoors when an appropriate corrosion-protection system is applied. Common options include painting, protective coating and hot-dip galvanizing. Maintenance requirements depend on the exposure environment.
Can checker plate be used as a structural load-bearing floor?
Yes, when the grade, thickness, span, support spacing and connection system have been properly designed. Final load capacity and deflection must be verified by the project engineer.
